Saint Adrian – Year of Millenium (1019-2019)
For the 1000th anniversary of the consecration of the St. Adrian Basilica in 2019 a millennial celebration is organized, the aim of which is to preserve the Benedictine and national heritage of Zalavár and Zalaapáti.
On 18 May 2017 a conference was organized to preserve the Benedictine and national heritage of Zalavár and Zalaapáti. Kint St. Stephen founded anew the Benedictine monastery at Zalavár in 1019 which stood until 1702 at Zalavár-Vársziget. The rebuilding of the demolished monastery did not happen and after the expulsion of the Ottomans the Benedictines rebuilt their new monastery at Zalaapáti, which carried on the heritage in name (Zalavári – St. Adrian).
As the millennium nears the mayors of the two villages organized the conference to find partners for the dignified celebration of the millennium. The conference was opened by dr. Asztrik Várszegi, titular bishop and the archabbot of the Pannonhalma Benedictine Monastery after the greetings of Ildikó Horváth, the mayor of Zalavár. Imre Pácsonyi, Deputy Head of the Zala County Council talked about the possible developmental plans of the future and problems to be solved. He stressed that the next aim is to reach the certificate for “Memorial Site of Historical Significance”.
During the conference Béla Miklós Szőke (Archaeological Institute, Research Centre for Humanities, Hungarian Academy of Sciences) and Ágnes Ritoók (Hungarian National Museum, Archaeological Exhibition) talked about the Caroling heritage of Zalavár and the Benedictine Monastery. The presentation of the excavation site followed the professional lectures.
“Following” the historic track of the monastery, the conference continued in the former Zalaapáti Benedictine Monastery, where Tibor Bóka, parish priest of Zalaapáti and István takáts, chancellor of the Veszprém Archbishopric greeted the guests. The history of Benedictines at Zalaapáti was presented by Dr. Ákos Zágorhidi Czigány while the conference was conluded with future plans by Tibor Vincze, the mayor of Zalaapáti.
